4. Dennis Priestley wins the inaugural PDC World Championship in 1994.
Before the PDC ever existed, there was only one federation in the world of darts known as the BDO.
With tensions eventually rising between the federation and its players, sixteen household names including the likes of Eric Bristow and John Lowe rebelled against that federation and created the Professional Darts Corporation in 1993.
This was mainly due to ongoing grievances amongst the players towards the federations handling of the sport, citing a lack of opportunities to grow the game and become professionals.
Thus, this was the PDC’s inaugural World Championship, and as such it was deemed a huge risk by that group of men to take a stand and create a new vision for what the game looks like today.
Dennis Priestley would go on to defeat a certain Phillip Taylor 6-1 in the final, becoming the PDC’s first ever World Champion.
This symbolic moment became the catalyst for change and would set the foundations into place for the future of a now hugely popular sport that has grown immeasurably year in and year out.
Without those band of rebels though the game may have looked very different to what it is today, as the British Darting Organisation would eventually would become defunct in 2020.
I got goosebumps watching that again! Love the darts!
